We have submitted a planning application for the renovation of Haigh Hall in Wigan, Lancashire. Built between 1827 and 1840, the Grade II* listed country house has been in the possession of Wigan Council since 1947 and is currently on Historic England’s heritage at risk register. WWM are working with Purcell to transform the building into a new cultural venue for the region, providing galleries, an education studio, reading room and residency studio, supported by a cafĂ©-restaurant, events spaces, guest rooms, and rooftop bar.
Through targeted interventions, we are looking to democratise the building by challenging its historic spatial hierarchies, revealing the layers of its past, and making room for new stories. Taken together, the proposals transform what was once an emblem of aristocracy and industry into a hall for all – a people’s country house.
