AJ Retrofit
“Much of our vocabulary as architects is borrowed from the natural sciences of the 18th and 19th centuries: ‘Adaptation’ we borrowed, ‘Design’, we lent…With the slogan ‘form follows function’, radical architects adopted, at a remove of several generations, the principle espoused by conservative natural scientists. It was this proposition that Darwin gently demolished when he pointed out the strong similarities of structure between the human hand, the paw of the mole, the paddle of a porpoise and the wing of a bat. To paraphrase: life continually retrofits inherited forms to new functions.”
