Christian Kieckens exhibition opening, Antwerp
“I was careless, undisciplined, had no technical knowledge and didn’t speak any Dutch – obviously…Over the course of two years Christian patiently filled many gaps in my practical knowledge, taking me to his buildings under construction. Gently but firmly, he demanded me to work with greater discipline, and cajoled me towards a simpler, more direct way of thinking and drawing anything from furniture to the city. All this against a background of the latest CDs – a habit I suppose he picked up in his parents’ record shop – and last night’s gossip…”
William on working for Christian Kieckens 1993-5, as one of five speakers at the opening of the exhibition ‘Christian Kieckens – The House, The Archive, The Mentor’, at de Singel International Arts Centre, Antwerp.
